Electrical Engineering
As a core branch the department lives up to the developments taking place in the field of electricity generation through hydro, thermal, nuclear and nonconventional sources. Similarly the department studies the distribution of electricity and use of new materials being used in different applications. The undergraduate programme in the department has been re-accredited by NBA, AICTE and offers M.Tech. programme in power electronics and drives. Eminent professors are engaged in quality research and supervision of 7 Ph.D. scholars.
Overview of the department and laboratories :
Starting with an intake capacity of 60 in 1996 the Department of Electrical Engineering is now catering to the growing need of 240 students in 2009. It is offering a Master's Programme in Power Electronics & Drives. Because of its academic excellence, the undergraduate programme offered by the department has been accredited by National Bureau for Accreditation (NBA), AICTE. To further its academic and research activities, the Department has been optimizing its infrastructures and human resources. The second batch of Post Graduates in Power Electronics and Drive has passed out in September 2009. Students have also registered for Ph.D. programmes in Electrical Engineering.
The department has specific laboratories for Electrical Machines, Control and Instrumentation, Power Systems, Power Electronics, Basic Electrical, Network Devices and Electric Drives.
A Computational Laboratory has been added to the department for carrying out Computer Aided research activities in this department. MODROB (Modernisation and Removal of Obsolescence) is regularly being practiced in all the laboratories. Moreover a Robotics Laboratory is expected to function shortly.
The Machine Laboratory is equipped with modern electrical machines : single and three phase transformers with multi winding, DC & AC Motor Generator Sets, Induction and Synchronous Motors and Single Phase Motors to name a few.
The Control and Instrumentation Laboratory have Amplidyne Set, DC Position Control System, Data Acquisition System, PID Controller etc.
The Power Electronics Laboratory is equipped with Converter Rectifiers and Inverters, both single phase and three phase, Cyclo Converter, IGBT based Inverter and other modern equipments in the related field.
The Power System Lab is equipped with Relay Trainers, Oil Testing Kit, Current Injection Circuit, Artificial Transmission Line etc.
Basic Electrical Engineering and Network Devices Laboratory is meant for verification of Basic Principles of Electrical Engineering and Laws of Electrical Networks. The Department has its own Library having referred texts of international repute for faculty members & students to boost their knowledge.
Besides, the Department has added a computer lab to facilitate Computer Aided Electrical Machine Design, software based project work for final year under graduate Post Graduate students. This lab also promotes the faculty members for in-house R&D programme.
Interested teachers are regularly sponsored to carry out Post Graduate and Doctoral research programs in reputed institute outside SOA University.
Conferences, seminars, distinguished lecturers are organized regularly in the department.
