Civil Engineering
As a core branch, the department has grown to eminence with renowned faculty, updated curricula and clearly defined research areas. The three identified areas of academic curriculum and research are concrete structures, civil infrastructure systems and environmental engineering. The department addressed to its social responsibility by developing new materials to minimize construction residuals for the preservation of our environment. The department has advanced laboratories and is offering consultancy services to the department of Water Resources, Govt. of Orissa, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. It is also providing consultancy services in other areas of Civil Engineering. It offers B.Tech., M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes. The department has following well-equipped laboratories both for students training and research:
1. Geo-Technical Engineering Laboratory
2. Transportation Engineering Laboratory
3. Concrete Laboratory
4. Environmental Laboratory
5. Surveying Laboratory
6. Computational Laboratory
7. Structural Engineering Laboratory
8. Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics Laboratory
The department enjoys a teacher students ratio of 1:11. The students' performance has been excellent. In view of demand of the programme and encouraging placement, the intake has been doubled in 2009-10.
The faculty members of the department have commendable expertise over their respective subject.
In response to the contemporary demands the course curricula focuses on GIS & Remote Sensing, Disaster Management, Construction Planning and Materials Management, Water Power Engineering etc., which are core subjects and electives.
Introduction of M.Tech and Ph.D. programmes has broad based the research in sustainable Water Management, Water Resources Planning, Optimal Reservoir Operation, Sedimentation, Water and Solid Waste Management, Soil Dynamics, Traffic and Transportation Planning, Green Building, Adoption of Non-conventional Construction Materials, Earthquake Residential Structures etc.
The faculty's credibility is reinforced by research publications in indexed journals.
The course curricula has been updated to match the latest demand of various sectors with introducting courses like; GIS & Remote Sensing, Disaster Management, Construction Planning and Material Management, Water Power Engineering etc as core subjects and other latest subjects as electives.
The department has also stressed upon the research activities through introduction of M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes in various streams. A number of published research papers in prestigious indexed National and International Journals and Conferences show the credibility of the faculty and quality of research having practical utility. The department focuses on research areas of Sustainable Water Management, Water Resources Planning & Management, Optimal Reservoir Operation, Sedimentation, Water and Solid Waste Management, Soil Dynamics, Traffic and Transportation Planning, Green Building, Adoption of Nonconventional Construction Materials, Earthquake Resistant Structures and Disaster Management etc.
It is also actively associated with offering technical consultancy services in different Civil Engineering activities. It is already offering consultancy services to department of Water Resources, Govt. of Orissa, Indian Oil Corporation Limited and private organizations.
